Ani Choying Dolma is an exceptional singer, admired by fans in Nepal and throughout the world. People are moved to tears by the plaintive purity of her voice, and the haunting melodies of her ancient songs and hymes, passed from master to pupil for many centuries.
In 1997, Ani-la began performing and recording Cho for audiences around the world, connecting Westerners to Tibetan culture and music. Ani Choying has gained wide popularity in Nepal as well, after she released her first Nepali CD “Moments of Bliss” in 2004 for which she was bestowed with laurels for her fantastic soothing voice.

TARA: Female Bodhisatva

Tara is the Female deity of the Buddhist Pantheon, and probably the most popular goddess in the Buddhism. She is considered to be the goddess of universal compassion who represents virtuous and enlightened activity. It is believed that Tara is born from tear of Bodhisatwa of Compassion, Avalokiteshwor. White Tara is born from the left and Green Tara from the right. Tara is believed to protect the living beings while they are crossing the Ocean of Existence and Suffering.

GREEN TARA is represented seated on a lotus-throne, the right leg pendant, with the foot supported by a small lotus, the stem of which is attached to the lotus throne. She is slender, graceful in her pose, and dressed like a Bodhisattva and wears the five-leafed crown. These leaves of crown symbolize five Dhyani-Buddhas. Some time in her crown, the five Dhyani-Buddhas are figured.
Her hair is abundant and wavy. Her right hand is in 'charity' mudra, and her left hand is in 'argument' mudra, which holds the lotus.
She has two full open eyes, where as her another manifestation; the White Tara has seven meditation [half-closed] eyes. The goddess may also be represented with a small image of Amoghasiddhi [one of the five Dhyani-Buddhas] in her headdress.

GREEN TARA THANKGKA
WHITE TARA symbolizes perfect purity, and is believed to represent Transcendent Wisdom, which secures everlasting bliss to its possessor or worshipper.
The White Tara is represented seated, with legs locked, the soles of the feet turned upward [lotus posture]. She wears the same garments and ornaments as a Bodhisattva, and her hair is abundant and wavy. Her right hand is in 'charity' mudra, and left holding the stem of the full-blown lotus, is in 'argument' mudra. She generally has third eye of foreknowledge, and eyes on the palms of her hands and soles of her feet, symbolizes sensitivity.
Tibetan Lamaism believed that Tara is incarnate in all good women. She is also have Mortal base in Historic persons of the Nepali and Chinese Princess who married to the Great King sRong-tsan-sgam-po, and credited with introduction of Buddhism to Tibet. Tara holds a very prominent position in Nepal and Tibet.

New Arrival Singing Bowls

Singing bowls (also known as 'Himalayan bowls' or ring gongs) are type of musical instrument classified as a standing bell. Rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, standing bells sit with the bottom surface resting. The sides and rim of the bell vibrate to produce sound.
Singing bowls were traditionally used throughout Asia as part of Bon, Buddhist, nagapa tradition. Morden days Singing Bowls used worldwide for various purpose as meditaion, Yoga, healing device and religious practice. Also belived that the sound of singing bowl regarded as auspicious and drive away evil spirits.

According to tradition singing bowls were made of seven different metals, one metal for each of the planets, i.e. Gold (the sun), silver (the Moon), Copper (Venus), Mercury (mercury), Iron (Mars), Tin (Jupiter) and Lead (Saturn).

Avalokiteśvara, the ‘Beholding Lord’, is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron deity of Tibet, whose principal emanation is the Dalai Lama, and who is invoked by the famous six-syllable mantra: OM MA-NI PAD-ME HUM. In the Newar Buddhist tradition of Nepal he is commonly known as Lokeśvara, the ‘Lord of the World’, or as Mahakarunika, the ‘Great Compassionate One’, who has a hundred-and-eight different manifestations. And in China he is strongly identified with the Goddess of Mercy, Guan Shi Yin (觀世音), she who ‘Hears the Cries of this World’, who likewise has a hundred-and eight different manifestations.
Why Avalokiteshwor has 11 head and 1000 arms ?
According to a popular legend Avalokiteśvara once vowed that he would first free all beings from suffering before attaining liberation himself, so he set about this task with great effort. But when he saw how few he had so far saved compared to how many still remained, his sudden despair caused his head and body to explode into many pieces. Seeing his plight, Amitabha Buddha then came swiftly to his aid, and from all the shattered fragments reconstructed his body into a far more powerful form, with eleven heads and a thousand arms, so that he was able to gaze compassionately over all beings in the ten directions and reach out to them with his many arms. Another legend tells how two lakes were formed from Avalokiteśvara’s tears of despair, and from these lakes arose the lotus-borne forms of Green and White Tara.

Avalokiteśvara is the principal Bodhisattva or ‘Spiritual Son’ of red Amitabha Buddha, who presides over the western direction as the ‘Lord of the Padma or Lotus Family’, whose symbol is a lotus. In the Newar tradition Lokeshvara most popular aspect is as Padmapani, the ‘Lotus-bearer’, who stands gracefully upon a lotus-pedestal while holding the stem of a lotus in his left hand. Lokeshvara is usually white or sometimes red in colour, with two, four, eight or a thousand arms, and his characteristic emblem is an antelope-skin that is draped over his left shoulder.

Although this Bodhisattva of Compassion is widely adored and venerated throughout the Buddhist world, many of his unique Newar aspects are still unknown outside the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. So we have chosen to present some of these rare aspects of Lokeshvara in this exhibition, along with those that are more widely known within the Indo-Tibetan or Mahayana Buddhist traditions.

Beer is available at the gallery on March 13, 14 (Saturday and Sunday) from 4-8pm to introduce the exhibition and for one-on-one Q & A's.

Meaning of Swastika

The swastika,
Swastika is a Sanskrit word and it’s come from the word Swasti, means, all is well, good fortune, luck and well being. Swastika is a cross with four arms of equal length, with the ends of each arm bent at a right angle. Sometimes dots are added between each arm.

Swastika is an ancient symbol, and found worldwide. It is a sacred and prehistoric symbol that predates all formal religions known to humankind. Hindu and Buddhist rank Swastika second only to OM.
In Hinduism and Buddhism many gods and goddess holding Swastika (See left Ganesha picture, click to enlarge). Swastika can be seen in the art of the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Celts, Native Americans, and Persians as well Hindus, Jain and Buddhists. Below is a chart that display swastika used in different religion.

Today, Swastika remains widely used in Dharmic religion such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Though once commonly used all over the world without stigma, because of Hitler's use of the Swastika on the flag of National-socialist Germany, the symbol has become stigmatized in the Western world, the Swastika is known to the world over not as a religious symbol but as the Nazi emblem, notably even outlawed in Germany. But the Swastika continues to hold a religious significance for the Hindus, Buddhist, Jain and Others. Like OM, the origins of Swastika are lost in the misty realms of the past and they can only be guessed by piecing together of the surviving clues.

In Hinduism, the right-hand swastika (clockwise) is a symbol of Vishnu (Creator) and Ganesha, while the left-hand (counterclockwise) swastika represents Kali and magic (disaster). The Buddhist swastika is almost always clockwise.

In Buddhism, the swastika signifies auspiciousness and good fortune as well as the Buddha's footprints and the Buddha's heart. The swastika is said to contain the whole mind of the Buddha and can often be found imprinted on the chest, feet or palms of Buddha images. It is also one of the 65 auspicious symbols on the footprint of the Buddha.

The swastika has also often been used to mark the beginning of Buddhist texts. In China and Japan, the Buddhist swastika was seen as a symbol of plurality, eternity, abundance, prosperity and long life.
The swastika is used as an auspicious mark on Buddhist temples and is especially common in Korea. It can often be seen on the decorative borders around paintings, altar cloths and banners. In Tibet, it is also used as a clothing decoration.

Tibetan prayer flags or wind horse are square in shape, and traditionally printed in the color sequence of the five Buddha families; blue, white, yellow, red and green. These colors also represent the elements: earth (Yellow), water (Green), fire (Red), air/cloud (White), sky /space (Blue).
They are normally woodblock printed upon square of cottons, or more rarely upon silk and inscribed with various prayers, mantra, deity images, and auspicious signs. Tibetan Buddhists have hung Prayer flags for centuries outside their homes, and places of spiritual practice for the wind to carry the beneficent vibrations across the countryside. It’s believed that Prayer flags bring happiness, long life and prosperity to the flag planter and those in the surrounding area.

The traditional prayer flags are printed with the Wind Horse (Lung-ta) and four supernatural creatures (Garuda, Dragon, lion and tiger) are often printed upon prayer flags. These five animals, which represent the center and four directions, speedily carry these prayers as blessings upon the wind to the four corners of the earth. There are also prayer flags with Buddhist auspicious signs, protectors and enlightened beings such as Buddha, Green Tara, Padama Sambhava etc.

Prayer flags may also take the forms of long strips of prayer printed cotton, which extend along the whole length of a flagpole. Flowing valances of colored silk may also separate a series of hanging square prayer flags.

Dharma flags may be placed either inside of a building to increase the spiritual atmosphere or outdoors where the wind can carry their prayers. New prayer flags are hung at auspicious occasion, such as the Tibetan New Year festival of Losar. Right picture, the Sherpas asked permission from the Gods to climb the mountain. Sets of five color flags should be put in the order: yellow, green, red, white, blue (from left to right or from bottom to top.) These colors represent the five elements which is earth, water, fire, cloud/air and sky.

White – air (sometimes referred to wind or cloud)

Green – water
Yellow – earth

The Wind Horse (Lung-ta) carrying the “Wish Fulfilling Jewel of Enlightenment”, is the most prevalent symbol used on prayer flags. It represents good fortune; the uplifting life force energies and opportunities that makes things go well.
When one’s lung-ta is low obstacles constantly arise. When lung-ta is high good
opportunities abound. Raising Wind Horse prayer flags is one of the best ways

Carlton Rochell Asian Art opened in October 2002 in the Fuller Building, a New York City landmark home to many prominent art dealers.

The gallery specializes in sculpture, paintings and decorative arts from Tibet, Nepal, Cambodia, Thailand, India and Indonesia prior to 1850. Holland Cotter of the New York Times in his review of the inaugural exhibition wrote “The arrival of a new, open-to-the public gallery devoted to Indian and Southeast Asian art is an event for the city; such showcases are few and far between…although Himalayan and Cambodian bronzes are among the most exquisite items, the gallery is dominated by several large-scale sculptures of a kind we rarely see outside museums.”

Carlton Rochell spent the first eighteen years of his career at Sotheby's, where he founded the Indian and Southeast Asian Art Department in 1988. He handled important works of art from such well-known collections as Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller, Carter Burden, Alice Heerameck, William S. Tibetan Lama

I was reading a book Buddhism (Endless Path) by Diane and Jon Sutherland. It’s a book about Buddhism, this book give you some Information about early Buddhism to present Buddhism including Theravada , Mahayana , Vajrayana ( or Tibetan Buddhism) and Zen Buddhism. So today I would like to share what is Tibetan Lama, from this book.
TIBETAN LAMAS
Tibetan Buddhism was often referred to as religious teachers and central to the Buddhist doctrine and their institutions in the Himalayan region and in Tibet.

Certain Lamas have reincarnation lineages, known as Tulku. The most famous example of this is the Dalai Lama, who is said to be the Incarnation of the Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshwor. Believers are convinced that he has existed in 14 reincarnations since 1391.

Generally, Lama is a Tibetan title for a religious teacher. It is not applied to Tibetan monks generally, but does suggest spiritual attainment and an authority to teach.

Dalai Lama
Tibetan Buddhist believes that the Dalai Lama can trace back their linage to 1391. From the 17th century to 1959, the Dalai Lama was the head of the Tibetan government.

Dalai means “Ocean” in Mongolian and Lama is broadly the Tibetan equivalent to the Sanskrit word for spiritual teacher Guru. The Dalai Lama is more commonly translated as Ocean of Wisdom.

On the death of the Dalai Lama, the hunt begins for his reincarnation, a small child. Familiarity with the possessions of the previous Dalai Lama is usually the main sign of the reincarnation. The search usually takes a few Years.

Karmapa Lama
The Karmapa Lama is the head of the Kagyu School, one of the four major Schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The first Karmapa dates back to 12th century. The current holder of the Black crown or Black hat is the 17th reincarnation, although there is dispute between two candidates. read more about Karmapa here.
The Current Dalai Lama
The 14th and current Dalai Lama was born on 6 July 1935. Tenzin Gyatso was the fifth of the nine children from a farming family in Amdo province of Tibet. He was proclaimed to be the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of three. He was enthroned as Tibet’s head of state on 17 November 1950. Read more about H.H. Dalai Lama here

Tibet faced occupation from China and when the Tibetan resistance movement collapsed in 1959, the Dalai Lama fled to India, where he set up a Tibetan government in Exile.

Green Tara Thanka

This is an old Thanka painting of Green Tara, painted in Newari style. Green Tara is represented seated on a lotus-throne, the right leg pendant, with the foot supported by a small lotus, the stem of which is attached to the lotus throne. She is slender, graceful in her pose, and dressed like a Bodhisattva and wears the five-leafed crown. These leaves of crown symbolize five Dhyani-Buddhas.

Some time in her crown, the five Dhyani-Buddhas are figured.
Her hair is abundant and wavy. Her right hand is in varad or 'charity' mudra, and her left, which is in 'argument' mudra, holds the lotus.
She has two full open [human] eyes, where as her another manifestation the White Tara has seven meditation [half-closed] eyes. The goddess may also be represented with a small image of Amoghasiddhi [one of the five Dhyani-Buddhas] in her headdress.

Green Tara is represented seated on a lotus-throne, the right leg pendant, with the foot supported by a small lotus, which symbolize she is free from samsara – through her practice and attainments. She is ready to help for her practitioner. Green tara is very immediate and quick. One calls to her for immediate assistance, and also often for help with worldly things like lover, wealth and so on, as well as spiritual things.

We have read many posts about Ganesha. In the post Ganesha the God of Wisdom you can read about Ganesha’s broken tusk in briefly. There is several myth about his broken tusk, so in this post I will share some Stories behind how Ganesha lost his one tusk.

There is a Sanskrit name for Ganesha is Ekadanta (right picture) or one tusk Ganapati, read 32 forms of Ganesha. Some of the earliest icons show him handling his broken tusk. We can find many stories about how Ganesha lost his one tusk. In this post you will read three story behind it.

Ganesha said to have lost his one tusk in a fight with Parashuram

He said to have lost his tusk in a fight with Parashuram. "When Parashuram one of Shiva's favorite disciples, came to visit him, he found Ganesha guarding Shiva's inner apartments. His father being asleep, Ganesha opposed Parshuram's entry. Parashuram nevertheless tried to urge his way, and the parties came to blows. Ganesha had at first the advantage, seizing Parashuram in his trunk, and giving him a twirl that left him sick and senseless. When Parashuram recovering, he threw his axe at Ganesha, who recognizing it as his father's weapon (Shiva having given it to Parashuram) received it with all humility upon one of his tusks, which it immediately severed, and hence Ganesha has but one tusk.

A different legend narrates that Ganesha was asked to scribe down the epic of Mahabharata, dictated to him by its author, sage Vyasa. Taking into note the enormity and significance of the task, Ganesha realized the inadequacy of any ordinary 'pen' to undertake the task. He thus broke one of his own tusk and made a pen out of it. The lesson offered here is that no sacrifice is big enough in the pursuit of knowledge." In Some Ganesha Image, the broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata.

Another Story I found in the web is from Ganesha Chaturthi (the birth day of Lord Ganesha), which tells a third story:
"Indra, the god of the rain and skies, invited Ganesha to a feast. Taking his vehicle (his mouse), Ganesha began his journey to Indra’s palace. Because the mouse could not carry all his weight, he lost his balance and fell. The moon, shining in the night sky, laughed at him. Angered by this insult,Ganesha broke off his left tusk and threw it to the moon. And that’s why he may be called Ekadanta (means “with one tooth”). Ganesha also cursed the moon “that whoever looked at the moon on the Ganesha chaturthi night, they would undergo privations.” Even today, devotees avoidlooking at the moon on Ganesha days."

If you visit this blog regularly you must have notice some deities’s statues or thanka paintings which is in terrifying or wrathful forms. Wrathful deities looks terrified, hideous and hair raising and different then other Buddhist ideals. But They are not personifications of evil or demonic forces. Wrathful deities are kindly gods who symbolize the tremendous effort it takes to vanquish evil, the violence that is a fundamental reality of the cosmos and the human mind and protect the faithful by instilling terror in evil spirits. In Sanskrit, the wrathful deities are known as Dharmapalas, which means "Dharma Protector".

There is a group of eight Dharmapalas. Dharmapalas are divinities with the rank of Bodhisattva who wage war without any mercy against the demons and enemies of Buddhism.

In this post I am trying to give some emphasis on Mahakala. Mahakala is one of the eight dharmapala of the Buddhist pantheon. Mahakala's name translates as the "Great Black," one, or "Great time." The latter is a reference to the deity's ability to transcend all time. In Tibet we can found more then seventy five manifestations of Mahakala. As dharma protector, images of the wrathful deities are given a good position at the entrance doors of home and Buddhist Shrines.
Mahakala is one of the most popular terrific protectors in Tibetan Buddhism. Mahakala is worship in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He frequently appears at the inner entrance of a temple or is afforded a special shrine. His myth speaks of his having been tamed by Avalokiteshvara. He is sometimes even considered to be a fierce form of that Bodhisattva of Compassion.

Origin of Mahakala
The Buddha Amitabha manifested as Avalokiteshvara who took a vow to forgo his own enlightenment until all the realms of samsara had been emptied.( read full STORY OF 1,000 ARMS AVLOKITESHWOR)This vow required a renewal of determination, and so with Amitabha's blessing, Avalokiteshvara next assumed a form with eleven heads and a thousand arms. Still he had been unable to benefit even a few beings.
Therefore after reflecting for one whole week, he determined that by assuming a wrathful form he would be able "to subdue the degenerate beings of this Age of Darkness." Also he saw that even beings who practiced Dharma were unable to escape from the Bardo realms (time between rebirths where beings may face great anxiety and terrifying experiences) and he thought that in wrathful form he could also protect them in that way. And lastly, he thought that the beings in this Dark Age were poor and needy, experiencing only suffering after suffering, and that in wrathful form he could provide them an antidote to that suffering so that by simply making the wish (for protection) their needs could be met.

These three motives made his determination even greater than before and so from the heart of Noble Avalokiteshvara emerged a dark blue HUNG syllable that immediately became the Instantaneous Protector of Wisdom, Mahakala. (resource: www.khandro.net)

However, he is depicted in a number of variations, he is almost always depicted with a crown of five skulls, which represent the transmutation of the five kleshas (negative afflictions) into the five wisdoms.
The most notable variation in Mahakala's manifestations and depictions is in the number of arms, but other details can vary as well. For instance, in some cases there are Mahakalas in white, with multiple heads, without genitals, standing on varying numbers of various things, holding various implements, with alternative adornments, and so on.

Some of the different manifestations of the Mahakala
Six arms Mahakala or Vighantaka:- This form is most favored by the Gelukpa order of Tibetan Buddhism, and in this manifestation Mahakala is considered to be the fierce and powerful emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.

The Six-armed Mahakala's left leg is outstretched while the right is bent at the knee. The former symbolizes his accomplishments for the benefit of others and the later those for himself. An elephant-headed entity lying crushed under his legs (misunderstood as Lord Ganesha) represents our instinctive, primary animal force and urge, which when unleashed can prove to be extremely destructive. These cravings however, can also be extremely useful to our self-development and -realization when we master them and bring them under our moderation. Indeed, it is warned that dreaming about a herd of elephants is a sign that instinctive and irrepressible forces that may have been suppressed for too long are about to be unleashed.

Four Arms Mahakala
The four arms of this manifestation of Mahakala perform one of the following four positive karmas or actions, which are said to be his specific boon to his worshippers:
A). Pacify sickness, hindrances, and troubles.
b). Increase life, good qualities and wisdom.
c). Attract whatever Dharma practitioners need and bring people to the Dharma.
d). Destroy confusion, doubt, and ignorance.

White Mahakala
This is the wealth aspect of Mahakala which specifically supports the comfort and economic well-being of tantric practitioners. The following description is according to his sadhana:
"His body is white. His face is wrathful and he has three eyes. He has six arms. His main right hand holds a wish- fulfilling jewel (chintamani) mounted on a jewel-tipped handle, in front of his chest."

The White Mahakala is known as mGon po yid bzhin nor bu in Tibetan with the last four meaning 'Wish-Granting Gem,' and he is the special protector of Mongolian Buddhists. His iconography is rich in symbols delineating his 'wealth-deity' status. For example his skull bowl, rather than contain the mortal remains of his victims, is full of various jewels, and his crown is made up of five jewels instead of the trademark five skulls.

Mahakala Panjaranatha
Panjaranatha Mahakala is one of the most important Dharma protectors in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. He is a benefactor and protector of the monastic tradition, and is also the physical representation of the Mother Tantras of Chakrasamvara and Hevajra. Although typically dark blue, Mahakala and his entourage are gold in color, signifying the radiant gold light emitted by attained beings. This Statues shows Panjaranatha with his typical implements of flaying knife, skull cup, and staff, and he is surrounded by his messengers and attendants.

Today i am going to share Some interesting facts, (not about Buddhism or any Arts totally different) i guess many of you have read this stuff several time in your email inbox, as i did. This stuff come to me as forwarded email, I guess it's intresting to know the some facts while we are living in 2009. I am sure it's make you think, how far our life style have change, compare to several years ago. So lets back to the topic..

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2009 when...

1. You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.

The Five Patron saint of the Sakya Traditon
Five of the foremost luminaries of the Sakya tradition were the renowned
Sachen Künga Nyingpo (1092-1158),
Loppön Sonam Tsemo (1142-1182),
Jetsün Drakpa Gyaltsen (1147-1216),
Sakya Pandita (1182-1251),
and Drogön Chogyal Phagpa (1235-1280).
Together, they are regarded as The Five Patriarchs of the Sakya Tradition.

The Six Ornaments of Tibet
Following the Five Patron saint, were the Six Ornaments of Tibet who were also renowned spiritual masters of the Sakya tradition. The Six Ornaments of Tibet comprised of Yakton Sengey Phel and Rongton Sheja Künrig who were reputed for their authority on the teachings of the Sutra; Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo and Zongpa Kunga Namgyal, who were highly learned in the Tantras; Gorampo Sonam Sengey and Shakya Chogden who were highly learned in both the Sutras and Tantras. It was Gorampa Sonam Sengey who also introduced the formal study of logic in the Sakya tradition.

His Holiness Sakya Trizin is the present throne holder of the Sakya tradition is the 41st in an unbroken lineage that dates back to 1073 A.D.

In previous post you have read about What is Mantra?. In this post i would like to share about Prajnaparamita Sutra also known as perfection of Wisdom Mantra or Hridaya (heart) Sutra. Paramita refers to the perfection of which ferries one beyond the sea of suffering and mortality to Nirvana. There is Six Paramitas as following: (1) Dana, charity or giving, including the bestowing of truth on others; (2) Sila, keeping the discipline; (3) Ksanti, patience under suffering and insult; (4) Virya, zeal and progress; (5) Dhyana, meditation or contemplation; (6) Prajna, wisdom, the power to discern reality or truth. It is the perfection of the last one -- Prajna -- that ferries sentient beings across the ocean of Samsara (the sea of incarnate life) to the shores of Nirvana. We have read many mantra in this blog. Before we start this post I would like to share few words about Mantra
What is Mantra?
Buddhism in general and Vajrayana in particular, believe that thrugh three factors one can actualize the true accomplishment of Buddha hood. These are through the symbolic gesture known as Mudra and through meditative absorption.

Mantra here refers to the recitation of the essence words of the practice of the rituals of the deities.

Mantra is the essence of prayer that assures the receptiveness of the respective enlightened Deities. Mantra is request and the means through which one invokes the deities. It is the bridge between oneself and the deities.

Mantra is the common Language that both you and your savior deity have access to. mantra is the Memorable slogan you chant to have your request heard and answered by your savior deity. Thus, chanting mantra is tantamount to reciting whole texts or treatises of teachings relating to your Savior deity.
When the words mantra is separated in ti two segments, it revels the inner meaning of salvaging one's mind from conceptualization, concept and fear. The Word Man in Sanskrit means mind, and Tra in Sanskrit means to protect.

Reciting Such Mantras will assuredly bring the blessings of the deities more swiftly to your life and the lives of your loved ones.

Ani Tsering Wangmo

If you are fan of Tibetan chants and music, you may have heard this name, Ani Tsering Wangmo (Ani is a prefix added to the name of a nun in Tibetan Buddhism). I have posted many post about another Tibetan nun Ani Choying Drolma and her Albums. this is my first post about Ani Tsering Wangmo . I thought many times, after listen her album "Alokhe", that i will also write a post about Ani Tsering Wangmo. So here is the post about her.

So lets back to Ani Tsering Wangmo, she was born in Lhasa,Tibet and became a nun at the age of twelve. She joined the Yuloko Jetsun Ling Nunnery in Yanglashöe after fleeing Tibet in 1991 and arriving in Nepal.
Upon completing the traditional three-year retreat in 1996, she began and continues to work on the Ewam Pecha (religious text) project, collecting and digitizing the pechas for Gochen Tulku Rinpoche of Ewam.

Currently, she resides at Ewam Sang-ngag Ling in Montana where she has learned English. She continues to support Rinpoche's many worldwide projects. her albums see inside..

Ani produced her first album "Turquoise Leaf" in 2000, which was recorded in the US. It was in the traditional Tibetan chant genre, and based on the Buddhist chants from nunnery. The album was well received in the US. In 2004, she recorded the "Laughter of the Dakinis", based on Longchen Nyingthig Chöe practice.

Except from this two albums, she have another six albums and all the profits made by the sale of Ani's six CDs will be donated to three causes as below. So here you can listen two Chants by her in Album "Alokhe" first song is Heart Sutra Mantra and second is Chenrezig Mantra. This song is post here only for promote her albums.

The Yulokö Jetsun Ling Nunnery in Nepal, The proceeds from the CD, Compassion will go toward the Yuloko Jetsün Ling nunnery, in Nepal. This nunnery is under Gochen Tulku Rinpoche’s care. For half of each year the nuns are in solitary retreat in their rooms. For the other half of the year they study Dharma under the guidance of Rinpoche’s brother, Namchak Khenpo.

The Ewam Magadha Garden of 1000 Buddhas, The proceeds from the CD, Immeasurable Loving Kindness, will go toward the Maghada Garden. Gochen Tulku Rinpoche chose the name, "Maghada" because it is the district in India in which the holy land of Bodhgaya is located. He intends that the Magadha garden in America eventually be like a Western Bodhgaya.

At the center of the garden is a large statue of Yum Chenmo (the Great Mother) also known as Prajñaparamita. She will be surrounded by the thousand buddhas of this age. A thousand trees will be planted there, and a thousand stupas as well. They will all be arranged in the shape of a giant Dharma wheel, with many flowers, walkways, and an arched bridge. All of this is surrounded by large mountains in every direction, and the vast Montana sky, currently being built in Arlee, Montana. Her Six Albums are:

Kuvera (Jambhala) in Hindu mythology

We have read many post related with the God of wealth, Jambala or(Dzambhala). Today I will Share some information of Kuvera, his mantra and some of his statues, which is just arrived in our Gallery.

Kuvera is hindu form of the God of Wealth, Jambala or(Dzambhala). Kuvera is one of the most popular deities of Buddhists and Hindu tradition because of his bestower of wealth character. He is generally represented as the lord of wealth and guardian of the northern direction. According to Hindu mythology he is said to have performed austerities for a thousand years, in regards for which Brahma, the Creator, gave him immortality and made him the God of wealth, guardian of all the treasures of the earth which Kuvera has to distribute according to the destiny of the receivers. Kubera's dwelling place was said to be on Alaka in the Himalaya, abounding in wealth and magnificent. He is always surrounded with yaksha generals and Kinnars. He may have sometimes a third eye also.

Just Arrived Kuver Statues

Kuvera usually sits in Lalitashana (lotus asana). Like Jambhala , he carries a wish fulfilling gem in right hand to signify that if we follow his practice, we can “bear the fruits” of our efforts to gain spiritual attainments and enlightenment and left hand hold mongoose that vomits jewels, and both work to attract us to practice Kuvera (Dzambala) with an immediate promise of wealth.
His form is short, fat and strong, which comes from a time when it was widely believed that obesity is synonymous with wealth and luxury. His face carries an arrogant expression and sits in royal posture. This acts as a warning to tell us if we continue to look and act in this arrogant way in our attempts to get material wealth, we actually gain poverty instead. So Think! Is our greed hurting others?

The royal ease of his form indicates that Kuvera (Dzambala) is free from samsara – through his practice and attainments, he has also acquired all the money, fame and wealth of the universe and no longer experiences suffering. He can afford to be laid back, chilled out – he got everything that he needs! He shows us how our practice to him can ultimately lead us to enlightenment, where we too can literally have everything we want. At the same time, he steps on a conch shell with his right foot to mean that though he has attained all this great wealth, he is above it and will no longer allow the ties of samsara to subjugate him again.

In Nepalese Buddhist tradition Kubera also known as Vaisravana, he is represented sitting on a lion with a green mane, holding a banner of victory in the right hand and carrying the mongoose who vomits a wish fulfilling gem. He is chief of the Four Heavenly Kings and an important figure in Hindu and Buddhist mythology.

It's believe worshipping Kubera on a regular basis brings about a distinct change in one’s prosperity and luck though, of course, effort remains paramount.
Kubera blesses the worshipper with money and prosperity by drawing new avenues and sources of income and wealth. It helps increase the flow of funds and the ability to accumulate wealth.

Kuvera has his Own Mantra

or
"Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya,
Dhan Dhanyadhipataye, Dhan Dhanya Srimdhim mein Dapya Dapya Swaha

Well you have already read the meaning of the "OM MANI PADAME HUM" in this Blog. If you are new visitor to this blog you may like to know the meaning of the "OM MANI PADAME HUM", simply translate as : 'Hail, the jewel in the lotus' is a six syllable invocation or Mantra originates form Chenrezig, the Tibetan name for the Bodhisatva of Compassion (Sanskrit: Avalokiteshvara, one who is invoked as the Protector from danger.)

Master Artist Mukti Singh Thapa

Mukti Singh Thapa is one of Nepal's foremost traditional painters and one of the principal originators of the revived Newar style of painting. A Magar from Bandipur in the Eastern hills, Mukti Singh came to Kathmandu and began painting in the mid 1970s, and quickly became attracted to the early medieval Newar style of the 13-16th centuries.

In this style he has become a master, one of the only painters using this style and associated techniques who does not rely on copying earlier works, preferring to design his own compositions within the bounds of the Newar paintings iconography and canon. He paints almost exclusively in the natural pigments of the Newar palette. Paintings Below are exhibition displays the works in Mukti's atelier at the end of 2007.

Newari arts had a great influence on the development of Tibetan paintings. The arts flourished later in the 15th and 16th century. Tibetan reliance in newar style in painting was finally replaced by distinctly Tibetan style. The existence in constant assimilation, adoption of new ideas in a vibrant cultural resulted into two developments in Tibetan paintings in 15th century based on Indo-Newar and primarily Chinese elements. MANJUSHREE CAVE IN NEPAL

Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is rich in arts, architecture, culture and religious spots which make it a great tourist destination for national and international visitors. Manjushree Cave is a new destination in Kathmandu which opened for visitors from Jan. 30. 2007.

Who Is Manjushree ?
MANJUSHREE, personification of Transcendent Wisdom, and embodiment of the discriminative awareness (prajna). He is also the first among other Boddhisattvas according to Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. In the Namasangiti [Mahayana scripture] he is called 'Adi-Buddha', or pre-moral Buddha, while in some of the text of sutras, he is referred as an historical character.

Manjushree Cave ( Nepali word is "Gufa") is located in Chobhar gorge of Kritipur municipality, which lies in the southern part of Kathmandu Valley. Chobhar gorge, where the Manjushree Cave is located, is related with the interesting legends of the origin of Kathmandu Valley.

In the Svayambhu-purana, it is related that Manjushree left Mount Pancasirsha to visit the shrine of Svayambhu [presently in Kathmandu], which was on a mountain in the center of Lake Kalihrada. He found the lake filled with aquatic monsters and the temple inaccessible. He therefore 'opened with his sword a valley on the southern side of the lake [presently CHOVAR], the waters of the lake drained through the opening, leaving dry land at the bottom, and this was the Katmandu, the capital city of Nepal. So, he is believed as founder of civilization in Nepal and a 'Wanderer' [mendicant Buddhist priest] who propagated Buddhism into Nepal. That's why the cave is named after the name of Manjushree.

Manjushree Cave was formally opened by the Jal Binayak Community Forest Users' Group. The total length of the cave is said to be 1250m long, although only 350m of the cave is open to visitors. One has to pay an entrance fee to explore the cave. The fees are a minimum US$5 to a maximum $10 per person. The price depends upon the length of the route that a visitor wants to visit. The cost of the headlamp and a cave guide is included in the price.

There are five routes which have been opened at present. These routes converge at different points, so it is possible for visitors to enter from one point and to exit from another point. There are three entrance points; one is the main entrance and the others are Bagh Gufa and Naya Gufa.

There are two small ponds inside the cave. The first pond is Mahadev Pond which is 40.3m from the main entrance and the other is Naya Pond which is about 60m from main entrance.

The cylindrical route of the cave where visitors have to bend their bodies to pass through. This path can be seen as soon as a visitor enters the cave.
Inside the cave you can find a small pond which is named "Naya Pokhari"

The Kalachakra seed syllable or Tenfold Powerful One is the best known symbols of the Kalachakra system. The symbol consists of an ornamental ring of fire, then the main symbol which combines seven individual syllables, on top are a crescent, a disc and a curved shape, making ten.

Kalachakra Symbol or tenfold powerful one is very popular Among Tibetan and Nepalese community. This is one of the most treasured of protection symbol, emerge from Tibet. Mostly Buddhist family decorated their house with the many auspicious Symbols including Kalachakra symbol for complete and Ten fold powerful protection against spirit harm, untimely death and non-virtuous behavior.

If you visit in Thai temple you may notice the 8 Buddha statues with different gesture, they are the Buddha images for the Seven Days of the Week (wednesday have two Buddha image). You may want to know the meaning of 7 days Buddha. Buddha gestures represent certain events in the Buddha’s life. These events are thought to have occurred on certain days. The Buddha Image gestures representing these events also associated with the days on which they occurred. People, who born on a certain day of the week, may be most interested in a Buddha Image related to that day, like when commissioning a Buddha image. Buddha Image for Sunday:
In Pensive thought, the enlightened Buddha stands with hands crossed over his abdomen (right hand over the left). The Buddha contemplates his achievement of complete knowledge under the Bodhi tree.
After enlightenment, the Buddha stood still for seven days under the Bodhi Tree to contemplate the suffering of all living things. He was tempted to enter Nirvana at once (By Mara), but he wants others to know the true doctrine, and resolves to communicate his doctrine to others.

Buddha Image for Monday:
Preventing Calamities (This gesture is Similar as the Image for 'Stopping the relatives from fighting').
The city of Vesali was under attack by three evils: poverty, cholera and devils. Devils were roaming the city feasting on dead bodies and even people. The King of Vesali was advised to ask for the help of the Buddha.
Accepting the invitation, the Buddha with company, arrived at Vesali. With his transcendental powers, he caused heavy rain to pour down, so heavy that it cleaned the city of all dead bodies and pollution.
Later on, Ananda, his disciple went around the city, reciting portions of the Tripitika, and sprinkling holy water around the city. Suffering humans were healed, while all devils were frightened and ran away from the city.
Yellow is color for Monday. People who born Monday’s character: Good memory, serious, love to travel

(The Buddha stops the relatives from fighting or pacifying his relatives. When the Buddha came back from Heaven, he found that his relatives were quarreling about the right to use water from a river for their rice fields. The Buddha encouraged them to compromise and said that human life is much more valuable than water and it was not worth killing men for water. Then, his relatives stopped fighting.)

Reclining Buddha
Left arm along the body, right arm serves as a pillow with the hand supporting the head.
The reclining Buddha represents the passage to Nirvana or a resting Buddha. The gesture represents complete peace and detachment from the world. It was believed that the Buddha entered Nirvana on this day of the week.

Holding an alms bowl
The Buddha is standing with both hands around an alms bowl.
This symbolizes Buddha visited his family after four years in the monastery. In the morning the Buddha went out to receive alms in the city. His father was not content when he saw the Buddha “begged” for food holding an alms bowl. Buddha explained to his father that performing pindabat, or holding an alms bowl are the lineage of Buddha. Thus, the disciples can offer their food. The virtue of giving among Buddhists is strong until today.

8 Symbols in Wood Carving

In Mahayana Buddhism there are eight auspicious symbols (sanskrit: Astamangal) or the eight auspicious and glorious emblems. These symbols appear all together (like picture in right) or single as frequent decorative motif in stone, wood, metal and paintings. In this post I like to show you eight auspicious symbols carved in wood.
These symbols are believed to represent the gifts, given by celestial beings to the Shakyamuni Buddha on his attainment of enlightenment of Buddhahood.

Precious Umbrella
The precious umbrella symbolizes protection and royalty. The shadow protects from the heat and sun, and the coolness of the shade represents protection or preserving beings from the heat of suffering, obstacles, desire, illness and so forth in this life and all kinds of temporary and enduring sufferings of the three lower realms, and the realms of men and gods in future lives. It also represents the enjoyment of a feast of benefit under its cool shade. The parasol dome can symbolize wisdom and the hanging skirt symbolizes compassion.

Right-coiled White Conch
The white conch which coils to the right symbolizes the deep, far-reaching and melodious sound of the Dharma teachings, which being appropriate to different natures, predispositions and aspirations of disciples, awakens them from the deep slumber of ignorance and urges them to accomplish their own and others' welfare.

Victory Banner
The victory banner symbolizes the victory of the activities of one's own and others body, speech and mind over obstacles and negativitities. It was adopted as the symbol of Buddha's enlightenment. It also stands for the complete victory of the Buddhist Doctrine over all harmful and pernicious forces.

Golden Fish
The golden fish symbolizes happiness the auspiciousness of all living beings in a state of fearlessness, without danger of drowning in the ocean of sufferings, and migrating from place to place freely and spontaneously, just as fish swim freely without fear through water.

Dharma Wheel
The golden wheel symbolizes the auspiciousness of the turning of the precious wheel of Buddha's doctrine, both in its teachings and realizations, in all realms and at all times, enabling beings to experience the joy of wholesome deeds and liberation.

Endless Knot(The auspicious drawing)
The Endless Knot symbolizes the mutual dependence of religious doctrine and secular affairs. Similarly, it represents the union of wisdom and method, the inseparability of emptiness and dependent arising at the time of path, and finally, at the time of enlightenment, the complete union of wisdom and great compassion.
Endless Knot is one of the most favorite symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. It is often related to the endless wisdom of Buddha and it is also significant for the interaction of opposing forces leading to their union and harmony in the universe. The symmetrical shape of the knot signifies all these things and arouses the curiosity of those who are passionate about wearing Tibetan jewelry. Giving someone Tibetan gift representing an Endless Knot, it signifies a connection between the giver and the receiver. It is also a reminder that the roots of every future positive effect are found in the present.

Lotus Flower
The lotus flower symbolizes purity, It is able to grow and blossom from the muddy water, and therefore is a symbol of divine generation. the complete purification of the defilements of the body, speech and mind, and the full blossoming of wholesome deeds in blissful liberation. Deities are often depicted holding a lotus as a symbol of their purity, compassion, renunciation and perfection of qualities.

Vase of Treasure
The treasure vase or (sanskrit: Kalash) symbolizes an endless rain of long life, wealth and prosperity and all the benefits of this world and liberation.

Eight Auspicious Symbols are usually displayed during the all good ceremonies. i.e.: consecration of house, fire sacrifice, wedding, etc.

Medicine Buddha and his mantra

Bhaisajyaguru, also known as the Master of Healing or Medicine Buddha, is the Buddha of healing. His full name means "Medicine Master" or the "master of remedies". In Mahayana Buddhism, Bhaisajyaguru represents the healing aspect of the historical Buddha Sakyamuni, who has attained the state of perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings.

In Tibetan images of the Medicine Buddha, his body is a deep royal blue as sky in colored surrounded by a halo of rainbow light. His holy sky body signifies omniscient wisdom and compassion as huge as limitless space and is particularly associated with healing both mental and physical suffering.

His right hand faces outward, symbolizing his bestowal of boons and holds a spring of aurora, or cherubic Myrobalan, from which much of Tibetan medicine is compounded. Tibetan medicine recognizes three basic types of illness, the root causes of which are the conflicting emotions -- passion, aggression, and ignorance. Myrobalan is the only herb in the Tibetan medicine that can aid in healing each of these three types of diseases. In his left hand he holds a bowl containing three forms of ambrosia: the nectar that cures disease and resurrects the dead; the nectar that counteracts aging; and the supreme nectar that illuminates the mind increases knowledge.

The practice of the medicine Buddha is very powerful, not only for healing diseases, but for purifying the negative karma of those who recover from illness and those who dies of it. This practice is also powerful for bringing success, temporary as well as ultimate. Making a connection with him, practicing meditation, reciting his mantra or even just saying his name helps us achieve inconceivable benefits

This is the short version of the Medicine Buddha Mantra, which is known as the Medicine Buddha Heart Mantra, is:

Tayata, Om, Bhaishaye Bhaishaye Maha-Bhaishaye Raja Samudgate, Svaha.
or, pronounced the Tibetan way:
Tayata, Om, bekandzeh, bekandzeh maha-bekandzeh, radza samungateh. Soha.

Meaning Of Mantra

Tadgataya: means once came
Bekandze: means great eliminating of pain, The second "bekandze" eliminates all the true cause of suffering.
The third maha bekandze "great eliminating" refers to eliminating even the subtle imprints left on the consciousness by disturbing thoughts.
Om is composed of three sounds, ah, o, and ma, and signify the Medicine Buddha's completely pure holy body, holy speech, and holy mind.
Samudgate: means the supreme heights. Like this my prayer shall go to the highest and the widest and the deepest.
Svaha: I offer this prayer and relinquish to you Medicine Buddha
'May all beings benefit from the sublime love and power of Medicine Buddha'

This is the long version of the Medicine Buddha Mantra in Sanskrit:
Om namo bhagavate bhaisajyaguru vaidūryaprabharājāya vathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: om bhaisajye bhaisajye bhaisajya-samudgate svāhā

Another version of the long mantra is as follows:
Om namo bhagavate bhaisajyaguru vaidūryaprabharājāya tathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: om bhaisajye bhaisajye mahābhaisajye bhaisajye rāja samudgate svāhā

Ven. Thrangu Rinpoche has said that a mantra is essentially an elaboration on the deity's name, and that any mantra is the shortest possible form of the sadhana.

Tibetan prayer wheels (Tib: Mani wheels ) are Prayer devices for spreading spiritual blessings and well being. Rolls of thin paper, imprinted or written with many mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum", written in an ancient Ranjana script or in Tibetan script, are spin around an axle in a protective container, and spin around and around. Typically, larger decorative versions of the syllables of the mantra are also carved on the outside cover of the wheel.

Ganapati worship lokeshwor as form of Stupa, the central figure in this superb painting, is associated with good fortune, auspicious beginnings, and the successful overcoming of obstacles. "Ganapati" is the Buddhist name for the Hindu elephant head-god ( read: WHY GANESHA HAS ELEPHANT HEAD ), Ganesha, the god of wisdom is also known as "sidhi data" or bestower of success in work. In this Thanka Ganesh worship Stupa with Pancha Buddha, Lokeshwor appear above stupa holding full blown lotus in left hand while right hand exhibits the abhaya mudra (gesture). Dhyani Buddha Amoghasiddhi and Green Tara also appears at Top of the thangka. Amoghasiddhi Sitting in meditation position above clouds, his left hand on the lap and the right exhibits the abhaya mudra. he is green in color.
On the Top right of thanka Green tara siting on Branch of tree. Green tara reaches out her hand in the gesture of granting protection, freeing one from fear, obstacles, and difficulties. With her right foot stepping forward, she is alert, determined, and ready to actively help all who call upon her. Green Tara is known as the 'Swift One' or the 'Swift Liberator' due to her immediate response to those who request her aid. Green Tara's compassion for the welfare of all living beings is said to be even stronger than a mother's love for her children, also holding half blown water-lily with long petals.

His primary hands exhibit Namskar mudra gesture of worship. 2nd right hand offering flowers at stupa and 2nd left hand holding axe and offering lotus flower by his trunk. He is jeweled with crown. Vajradhara, the 'Indestructible', lord of all mysteries, master of all secrets, is an exoteric representation of Adi-Buddha ( in vajrayana, Adi Buddha is regarded as the highest deity of the Buddhist pantheon), and in this form is believed to reign over the Easter Quarter. According to Mahayana school, it is to Vajradhara that the subdued and conquered evil spirits swear allegiance and renounce all active opposition to the Buddhist faith.

Certain Lamaist sects identified Vajradhara with Vajrasattva , while others looked upon Vajrasattva as an active form of Vajradhara, who was too lost in divine quietude to occupy him directly with the affairs of sentient beings. Others again worshipped Vajradhara as a supreme deity distinct and apart from Vajrasattva. The two greatest sects of Mahayana school: Kargyu-pa and Gelugs-pa acknowledged Vajradhara as supreme, and looked upon as Adi-Buddha.

He is always represented seated, with lotus posture and wears the Boddhisattva crown as well as dress and ornaments. His arms are crossed on his breast in the vajra-hum-kara mudra holding The Vajra and Ghanta . Vajradhara is dark blue in color. Sometimes Vajradhara depicted in father-mother (Yab-Yum or Shakti) aspect too. Generally this form is not exhibited in open. It is shown only to those who are initiated in Highest Yoga Tantra. Vajradhara depicts the same as in the single form (see the picture).

Vajradhara is the primordial buddha, the dharmakaya buddha and is regarded as the highest deity in the Buddhist pantheon. Vajradhara, expresses the quintessence of buddhahood itself. Vajradhara represents the essence of the historical Buddha's realization of enlightenment.

Historically, Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree in Bodhgaya over 2500 years ago and then manifested as the Buddha. According to Buddhist cosmology, he was the Fourth Historic Buddha of this fortunate eon. Prince Siddhartha's achievement of enlightenment, the realization, or wisdom of enlightenment itself, is called the dharmakaya, the body of truth. When he expresses that realization through subtle symbols, his realization is called the sambhogakaya, the body of enjoyment. When such realization manifested in more accessible or physical form for all sentient beings as the historical Shakyamuni Buddha, it is called the nirmanakaya, the body of manifestation.

The dharmakaya, synonymous with Vajradhara Buddha, is the source of all the manifestations of enlightenment. Vajradhara is central to the Kagyu lineage because Tilopa received the vajrayana teachings directly from Vajradhara, the dharmakaya buddha. Thus, the Kagyu lineage originated from the very nature of buddhahood.

We have already talking about Prayer Wheel Tibetan prayer wheels (Tib: Mani wheels ) are Prayer devices for spreading spiritual blessings and well being. Rolls of thin paper, imprinted or written with many mantra (prayer) "Om Mani Padme Hum" (Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying "Om mani padame hum" mantra, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig Avalokiteshwor, the embodiment of compassion.), written in an ancient Newari (Ranjana) script or in Tibetan script, are spin around an axle in a protective container, and spin around and around. In the case of a small hand-held wheel like this one the scroll can be a 20 or more yards (meters) in length. Typically, larger decorative versions of the syllables of the mantra are also carved on the outside cover of the wheel.

Viewing a written copy of the mantra is said to have the same effect as chanting Mantra and the mantra is carved into stones left in piles near paths where travelers will see them. Spinning the written form of the mantra around in a Mani wheel is also supposed to have the same effect; the more copies of the mantra, the more benefit.

Prayer Wheel That we Have:

We have different type of Prayer wheels. Hand held wheels, the most common type, are made to be spin with one hand. They are generally made of a round body of metal (sometimes of wood), penetrated along its axis by a metal axle mounted in wooden or metal handle. The cylinder, along with the mantra "Om mani padame hum" roll it contains, can be kept turning with a slight rotation of the wrist, With the help of a weighted cord or chain. Parting from the Four Attachments by Phakchok Rinpoche

November of 2003 during the Fall Seminar given at
Ka Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery

Please set the mind on supreme enlightenment. Thinking that all sentient beings are my mothers as vast space pervades, I shall establish them to the supreme achievement, the level of complete enlightenment. In order to accomplish this, I will receive these teachings of the sacred Dharma and put them into practice in the authentic way. In this way, set the mind on enlightenment and so listen.

What we will be talking about here today is a set of teachings called “Parting from the Four Attachments.”
“If you are attached to this life,
you are not a practitioner”
Sometimes, Buddha’s teachings and Buddhism are easy to understand but very difficult to practice. That’s why in the history of the Dharma there were not many practitioners that were very successful. Why? Because we are habituated to our attachments; we are used to thinking “me first.” We are very habituated to them. Because of this, we can’t get free from our habitual patterns which are like a shadow. Wherever you go, your shadow follows you. That’s it; that is attachment- wherever you go, it goes with you. Whether you think that you are a good practitioner or not, it doesn’t matter. Your attachment is there, with you.

In the Buddhist tradition the most important things that you need to know are what ignorance, obstacles, and hindrances are. After this, you need to know what makes the path; what kind of antidote you need to eat. In other words, you need to know how to practice.

In my experience, Buddhist teachings are not that easy. First, they are quite difficult to understand, believe, and trust. Why? Sometimes they are beyond what we think, so they are very difficult to trust. Secondly, they are very difficult to practice. Why? The practices are the opposite of what we usually do. That is the Buddha-Dharma in a very short form. This is why I say that in my experience Buddhist teachings are, in general, very difficult to combine with our general life style. That’s why many teachers and many good practitioners say that if you really want to become a good practitioner, you must abandon cities and shouldn't talk with people. One of my root gurus used to say that he was afraid of people; that he didn't want to meet anyone. He was very realized. He didn't want to go into the Samsaric thought- Samsaric dream, as I prefer to say. It is then extremely important to understand that the Buddha-Dharma is exactly the opposite of what you are doing.

Today’s teaching has a very nice name, “Parting from the Four Attachments.”

This teaching is very high. Most practitioners want to be enlightened, so they only want to get involved in the highest teachings and in the highest practices. However, without these four teachings, you cannot go higher; you cannot become enlightened. That is guaranteed by Manjushri, not by me.

How did this story begin? The story of these four sentences starts with the Sakyapa’s first teacher, Sachen Kunga Nyingpo. When he was twelve years old he met his teacher, Bari Lotsawa. His teacher told him that he needed to study, so he had to choose a wisdom Yidam, like Manjushree, and practice according to the Sadhana, in order to become a learned person. In India and Tibet many learned people, who also had high realizations had, at some stage, to choose their own Yidam. Without a Yidam, one can never have any realizations. This is the Vajrayana way. After choosing Manjushree as his Yidam, he went into retreat for six months. After he finished the retreat, Manjushree appeared in front of him and in Tibetan said… Ok you may think, “Why did Manjushri talk to him in Tibetan if he is from India?” Well, because the practitioner was Tibetan. I guess that if he had talked to a Westerner he would have talked in English, but in this case the practitioner was Tibetan, so he spoke in Tibetan. Otherwise, if had talked in Hindi, the practitioner would have said, “What?! I didn’t understand!” He said these four sentences in Tibetan:

Tse di la shen na chö pa me
Khorwa la shen na nge jung me
Dak tön la shen na jang sem me
Dzin pa jung na tawa me

Which means:

If you are attached to this life, you are not a practitioner.
If you are attached to Samsara, you have no renunciation.
If you are attached to your own welfare, you have no Bodhicitta.
And if there is any grasping, you don’t have the view.

If I go into retreat these four sentences are all I need.

The teacher thought that this was Manjushri’s blessing, as the result of finishing the six month retreat. Then the student went on to teach many disciples. So without going into a lot of complicated historical details, this is in short how this teaching came about the first time.

As for the Buddha’s teachings, it is said that the word of the Buddha is as vast as the ocean, that the scriptural traditions are many, and the instructions are profound. On the other hand, we can include all the Buddhist teachings in the three Pitakas, the three receptacles, which are the receptacles of the Vinaya, the Sutra and the Abhidharma.

Don’t think that in the Buddhist tradition you need to know many points. If you know the key point you can understand like this [Rinpoche snaps his fingers]. If you don’t get the key point then you might study for a whole year but get completely lost in texts. On the other hand, if you know the key point then you can remember everything. For example, if somebody asks you, “What’s the real meaning of Buddhist teachings?” you can answer “non-attachment.” Everything is there; the main point is non-attachment. In practice, I’m one hundred percent sure that it is very difficult, but from my mouth these words come out easy, eh? You can hear; it’s very easy. However, when you go back and try to practice, then it is very difficult. Really. I experienced this; I know how difficult it is.

So, the first statement says:

“If you are attached to this life, you are not a practitioner.”

Many new practitioners, new people, or new students have come to this monastery. First, I want to tell you that you need to search, “Why are you in this world?” If it is good or bad it doesn’t matter, but why are you here? War is coming; new sicknesses without cures are coming. So, why are you here? Every step in life is suffering. Sometimes you think its suffering; sometimes you don’t. Why is it like that? Did someone make you? Did Yamaraza, the Lord of Death, make you? Did God make you? Who made you? In Buddhism, we don’t say that a Surpreme One made us, we say that we are made by ourselves. That’s why you can decide yourself whether you will suffer or you will be happy.

I’ve searched. I don’t want to say I’ve searched a lot, that’s a little lie. But I’ve searched. I was listening to a teaching on a movie show. One Punjabi Sikh said Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Sikhism are all the same. At the beginning I wondered why he didn’t say Buddhism, but afterwards I found out that they say, “God made everything.” I’ve searched many times; I’ve talked to Christians and Muslims many times. We need to search. Searching is not bad, but if you search you need to find something. I have found that it’s quite reasonable to say that everything is made by mind. Everything is in the mind.

The first statement says that if you are attached to this life, you are not a practitioner. It says you are not a practitioner! I’m really sad. Before, I thought I was a practitioner; I had a little bit of pride. People said, “You are a Tulku.” I thought, “Yeah, maybe there is something.” But, I saw these four sentences and studied more, and I asked if it is really like this. I asked one of my teachers, a Khenpo, and he said, “Yes.” Then I felt, “Oh, I’m not a good practitioner.” Then he said, “If you have attached to this life you are not a practitioner.” I then said, “I’m really attached to this life!” I asked how to practice. He said, “How are we attached to this life? It means to want to be famous.” It is very important that many Shedra students are here. It is very important not to think you want to become famous by writing books or something in the eight worldly concerns. Don’t think that! If you think this while you study, it is all negative and it is opposite from the teachings.

My third year teacher told me, “You study here; means they say you are a Tulku, a reincarnation.” Before, all the monks would stay on the ground and I had a big, thick, special cushion. Two years later, the cushion was gone. My friend and I were looking for our place, and my teacher said, “No, you need to stay the same like the other students.” At that time I felt like an arrow was shot to my heart. I thought, “Why do I need to stay down there?” After that, I found that pride comes easiest to Shedra people. I know that.

Study or meditation means that you need to abandon or have less attachment. You are attached to this life; of course you can’t abandon it now. You study, and then you know something. Then you say, “I know something, I’m a Three year Shedra student.” “I’m a three year retreat master.” “I’m a twenty-year Dharma practitioner; you are just a two year student.” “You don’t know anything, I know Mahamudra and Dzokchen.” I know this pride. I had this before. Before, when I was in fifth grade, I thought only my teacher was above me. I looked down to all other people as below me. That kind of pride can come. It is wrong. Why? You have attachment to this life. It comes to any kind of practitioner, not only Shedra students. I say Shedra because I studied before so I know that pride, I’ve experienced it. Why is it coming like this? You have attachment to this life. That’s why when you do any Dharma with pride, you look down to people. Sometimes you judge your teacher… “Oh my Guru, but he is wrong.” Why is like this? I’m sorry, but you are not practitioner, because you are attached to this life.

How should we practice? To practice, sit down and think of impermanence. Today’s practice is a little bit of mind changing. The antidote is impermanence. Why are we attached to this life? We think it is permanent. Many people want to live a long time; many people don’t want to die. Many people want to live long and stay young. This means they have attachment to this life. They don’t accept their nature. We can’t change our nature. You make something, and of course it will get old and break. You can’t make everything permanent. You can’t change it; nobody can change it. We all die. It’s sad to say, but we all die. In this room, I don’t know who is going to die first, but we will all die. Many young people my age don’t think that. We never think that we will die. We think that we are tough, that we are solid and healthy, but when we get sick, we think, “I’m young but I can be like old.” The last four days I was sick. I didn’t wash my face, brush my teeth; most of my mind was gone. A little heartbeat was left. What did I do? I just sat down and watched TV. I couldn’t look at a book because I was so sick, I couldn’t concentrate. I watched a movie; it was good. I’m thankful for the Television. I ate some medicine. I want to tell you this so it will be easy to understand that it is easy to become weak.

How to practice? Just sit down. If you want to open your eyes, it’s Okay. If you want to close your eyes, it’s Okay. When you do it, think that every human being in this world, six billion people, is dying. You can hear many people dying. One of my friends counts a year as a day in his mind. I told him not to tell me that; I did not want to think about it. We think a year is long, but it’s only 365 days. If we count the days as seconds, it’s easy to see how it goes. I studied seven years in the Shedra, now it’s gone, like that [Rinpoche snaps his fingers]. Time is very fast. I don’t want to think about it. Why? It makes me afraid, near to death. Everyone knows; we all will die. That is the first thing.

Secondly, we are not sure when we will die. Will we die now or will we die after my dream? Who knows? One of my friend’s relatives died in a shocking way. He slept, and in the morning, he was finished; dead. They said, “Hello, wake up, wake up!” He didn’t wake up. He was dead. They called me, “Oh, he’s dead!” I asked “How?” They said, “In the bed!” I thought death was something very awful with shaking, but no, it’s very easy. I will die easily; I don’t want to die suffering. I will die with a full stomach, and surely with good music, nice food. An easy death; that’s good.

What’s the worst is that the King of Death is not compassionate. He doesn’t have compassion at all: “I’m the King of Death, really I’ll give you time. Okay, you want to study or do something, I’ll give you one year, and then I’ll take you up.” He doesn’t do that. During your study time, he’ll take you up. During your practice time he’ll take you up. If you’re planning a retreat, he’ll take you up. Take you up or down, I don’t know, but he’ll take you.

The main point of the sentence “If you are attached to this life, you are not a practitioner,” is what I already told you. “My own name, my own family… for this I’m doing this practice…” I don’t think the Westerners do, but I’ve seen many Asians do this. “I’m doing this Vajrayana practice for wealth; I’m doing this Vajrayana practice for my family.” They also say the Amatayu chant, thinking all the while that other families will die soon, etc.

In this life, it is very important to search out what attachments we have; to self, life, etc. The more attachment you have in this life, the more suffering you have. It’s really true. The more you think of yourself, the more you will suffer. Why? The cause of suffering is thinking of your own welfare. Understand? If you don’t think of yourself so much, and if you are a little sick, it’s Okay. If you have much attachment, even if you’re only a little bit sick, then you cry out, “Oh, my leg, its pain, my neck, its pain! Oh!” A good practitioner, even with head pain or cancer inside the stomach, will not cry, will not say, “Ah.” He will just be like he was before. Normal people will say, “Ahhh! Please give medicine! No! Pain is coming!” Why is it like this? Why is it different? They’re both human beings, what is the difference? You can control all suffering from you mind. If you can control your mind you can control all suffering. If you can control your mind you can control all happiness. Whether you accept this or not, I don’t know. Yes or no? Do you accept? I think I’ll give you time to search, it’s Okay. Really search about what I’ve said.

As for how to practice, remember to think about how all people will die. Then about how we are not sure about when we will die. We do not want to think about it, but think! It’s good. If you don’t want to think about it, I’ll give you some photos of dead people. Then you will easily remember death. Really, I know it’s difficult, but we need to have many methods. What I’m talking about now is mostly my own experience. I need to go see dead people. When some people die there will be a puja for the dead person. Then I will see a dead person with my eye. Westerners only see dead people in coffins with nice makeup, very nice. What I see is not makeup; I like death. Not the pain, but some people die with their hands all crunched up; their mouths open; sometimes looking up, sometimes eyes closed. When one of my teachers passed away, he was very relaxed. He put his fingers like this, then he died, in the Buddha posture. His face looked normal, relaxed. Good practitioners with good faith die like normal. I was very happy; the old people were crying a lot. But for me and the monks, although the first time we were a little scared, it was Okay. Some other people die with their heads up very scary. When you see them there is fear inside your heart. Your heart shakes and your legs shake. That’s why I think this kind of experience, if you have, you will know what to do. I think that you will become a good practitioner. That’s why I have told you many times: we are sure we will die but we don’t know when we will die. This is a very difficult thing. I will give you some photos of dead people, and then you can look. After that, we will say, “We will die. What can we do?” That is the most important question. How can we prepare for when death comes? That is Dharma.

If you practice, whatever you did, you will have no regrets about what it was. You will die without fear. If regret is there, any kind of regret, then it is no good. We should die without regret and to be happy to die. However, merely being happy to die does not mean that you are a good practitioner. That’s very easy. Brave people will say, “I die in the war, I accept this kind of death!” They’ve already accepted it; that doesn’t really mean they are good Dharma practitioners. What I’m saying is that you need to prepare with Dharma practice. That kind of impermanence makes you less attached to this life.

When you think of impermanence, that you will die, you ask, “What do we need to do? That attachment is no good. We need to practice.” Why? That attachment leads to a lower realm. Lower realm, higher realm, heaven, hell; everything is in your mind. I can say, “In this world, there are Hot Hells, Cold Hells, Hungry Ghosts, Animals, Demigods, Gods; all inside this world, this global world.” Really. If you want cold suffering, then it is easy. Just wear these clothes and go to Tibet in the winter. It’s easy, that is hell. In Tibet they used to say, “Winter is hell, but summer is heaven.” In the summer, the mountains are covered with flowers, everything is natural. And you can go on a horse through the small hills, it’s so nice. Tibetan food is very easy. Tsampa and meat; there’s no need to carry the whole kitchen. You carry the tsampa here, the meat here, one small sword and tea; then go! You sit down, set up a small tent, make tea, add tsampa, and eat meat. That’s what we like, it’s very easy. If you want to sleep in the mountains you can sleep, wherever you like, it’s all full of flowers. It’s heaven. The water is clean; you can see all the stones inside very clearly. But winter! No flowers! No grass! No people are out; they’re all inside, shaking. We used to wear sheepskin, so it was Okay. With these clothes you couldn’t stand it for one hour. You’d be frosted.

That’s why there are the Cold Hells. As for the Hot Hells, there are deserts that are fifty or sixty degrees in the sunshine. If you have no water, you’ll die! There are so many people in many places that have no food and are hungry with big stomachs. All the hells are here!

I went to Switzerland this year and I gave a Dharma talk to some Swiss people. I said, “I think that in Switzerland you cannot be a good practitioner. If you want to be a good practitioner go to Nepal. Why? In Nepal you can see all of life, the whole circle of life. Dirty, clean, sickness, happy, or unhappy. Everything in life is there. Of course everything in life is present in Switzerland. However, the keep it all inside, and you can’t see it. Of course they have suffering! Of course they have sickness, but they all cover it very nicely. I was very shocked when I went to one family’s house. When they washed the dishes, I was very surprised. In Nepal we wash the dishes. I didn’t see them wash; I saw them put them all inside something and close it up. I was very surprised. I asked, “What are you doing? Who washed the dishes for these six or seven people? No one washed them!” They said, “Oh, Rinpoche, this is a washing machine!” I saw this for clothes before, but not dishes. I said, “Wow! No need to wash the clothes, no need to wash the dishes! And you don’t need to cook food! You just call and say, ‘Hello, Pizza Hut, please bring some pizza!’” And clean! There are many rules, but very clean! I then said, “I can only show you mental suffering. The only present I want to show you is that of mental suffering. If you want to see physical suffering, come to Nepal.”

Sometimes in Switzerland I felt generous and wanted to give money to beggars, but after searching and searching I didn’t find them! I really wanted to give but didn’t find them! In Nepal you can find them, so it’s very good. That’s why the Buddha said, “You need to respect the Buddha and you need to respect sentient beings, too. If there are only Buddhas, you cannot become enlightened. Sentient beings are very valuable because it is through those sentient beings that we can become enlightened.” That’s why I’m very happy that we have beggars. Some Westerners question a lot, asking, “Why do you give? If you give to them they will take drugs and drink alcohol!” I say, “I don’t care. I want to give, so I give to them. What they want to do with it, they can do.” Of course, giving food is the best, because it cannot be exchanged.

Okay, as for practicing impermanence and the Dharma, I have already described it. The first sentence is, “If you have attachment to this life then you are not a practitioner.” Please practice and make your attachment to this life less. Whether you are an old practitioner, a young practitioner or a new practitioner; if you want to be a Buddhist or not, I don’t care; just do not be attached so much. That is the worst thing.

You need to regret bad things. It is good. Why? Rejoicing and regretting are the opposites. Say you have a lot of attachment to this life, and someone gives 1000 rupees to beggars. You are rich, and you say, “He’s just showing off his money!” There is no rejoicing in what has been done, but just the saying of bad things. That results in accumulation of bad karma. Say that you say, “Oh! He’s giving 1000 rupees each to beggars! He’s so good! What a good person! Wow!” That is rejoicing in what he is doing. You can get the same merit from giving to each beggar. Then you will get the same merit.

I said to not have regret, meaning if you are dying and say, “Oh, now I’m dying, I can’t do anything. I didn’t get a chance to do this! I didn’t go there, or get to go in a Mercedes car! Ah!” Don’t regret like this. This is bad regret. I said to not regret like that. However, of course regretting the bad things that you’ve done is a good thing.

War is quite bad, because one dies with anger. Dying with anger is very bad. Dying with ignorance is very bad. What to do? Before death one needs to be a good practitioner. If they are not a good practitioner, then we can only pray. That’s all.

I said today to not be attached to this life. However, I didn’t say, “Don’t be attached to not wanting to do bad things.” In Buddhism, first we practice mind changing. In preliminary practice, we practice the mind changing practice. Why? We want to make sure that your mind is controlled by you, not controlled by other. We need to control our thoughts, not let our thoughts control us. This sounds like nonsense, because you think, “What? Thought is me and I am thought!” “Okay, I’m doing practice… Just practice…” Nowadays we say, “I’m doing practice,” but thinking, “I need to go to Thamel and have dinner. Tomorrow I have to study…” That is not practice; that is thinking. Thinking about what you’re going to do. What I’m saying is that you need to control your mind and your thoughts. How do you do that? Think of positive thoughts, positive attachments; to change the negative to the positive, to put more into the positive. Nowadays we are more into the negative. A good attachment is compassion; relative compassion and relative Bodhicitta. Thought without attachment does not exist. “Without attachment” exists. It is clear; as wisdom.

By this merit may all attain omniscience,
May it defeat the enemy, wrongdoing,
From the stormy waves of birth, old age, sickness, and death;
From the ocean of Samsara,
May I free all beings!

May the precious mind of enlightenment,
Arise where it has not arisen,
Where it has arisen,
May it not wane,
But further and further increase!

Dhyani Buddha Amoghasiddhi

Amoghasiddhi is the 5th dhyani Buddha in order (Read The Five Dhyani Buddha). The name Amoghasiddhi means "Almighty Conqueror" or "He Who Unerringly Achieves His Goal." Amoghasiddhi's All-Accomplishing Wisdom, or Wisdom of Perfected Action, anti dotes the poison of envy and jealousy. This wisdom confers perseverance, infallible judgment and unerring action.

Amoghasiddhi represents cosmic element of samskar ( Conformation) or the practical realization of the wisdoms of the other Dhyani Buddhas. He is described as the Dhyani Buddha of the realization of the Bodhisattva Path. A Bodhisattva is one who has forgone the bliss of nirvana with a vow to first liberate all beings.

Amoghasiddhi is the Dhyani Buddha of the north. His color is green, signifying the sun at midnight. He rules over the element of air and embodies the skandha of volition, also called the skandha of mental phenomena or tendencies of mind. His symbol is the vishwavajra, or double dorje or thunderbolt (See pictire in right) . It is made of two crossed vajras and symbolizes the highest comprehension of truth and the spiritual power of a Buddha.

Amoghasiddhi's vehicle is Garudas, or throne is supported by garudas. A garuda is a mythical figure, halfman and halfbird. In relation to Amoghasiddhi, Lama Govinda says the garuda symbolizes "man in transition towards a new dimension of consciousness,...the transition from the human to the superhuman state, which takes place in the mysterious darkness of the night, invisible to the eye. Amoghasiddhi also embodiment of rainy season. Sometimes a serpent with 7 heads forms the background as an umbrella. Infront of his Shrines, therefore, is a small squre pit or hole, which is meant for the snake.

Amoghasiddhi's mudra, formed by left hand lies open on the lap and his right hand exhibits the abhaya mudra. It is the gesture of fearlessness and protection.
Amoghasiddhi's bija is Ah and his mantra is "Om Amoghasiddhi Ah".

Amitabha is the most ancient Buddha among the five Dhyani buddha. He said to reside in the shukhavati heaven in peaceful meditation.
The name Amitabha means "Infinite Light." Amitabha's Discriminating Wisdom conquers the poison of the passions--all cravings, covetousness, greed and lust. With this wisdom, the disciple discerns all beings separately yet knows every being as an individual expression of the One.

In the mandala of the Dhyani Buddhas or in Stupa, Amitabha is positioned to the west. His color is rose (red), the color of the setting sun. He rules over the element of fire and personifies the skandha of perception. Thus, the eye and the faculty of seeing are associated with Amitabha. The peacock, with "eyes" on its plumes, is his throne-bearer or vehicle. The peacock symbolizes grace.

Amitabha's symbol is the padma, or lotus, placed between him and Vairochana in mandala. In Buddhism, the lotus can symbolize many things, including spiritual unfoldment, purity, the true nature of beings realized through enlightenment, and compassion, the purified form of passion. Amitabha's female consort is Pandara.

Devotees aspire to be reborn in Amitabha's Western Paradise, known as Sukhavati, where conditions are ideal for attaining enlightenment.
His mudra is the dhyana (meditation) mudra. His bija is Hrih and his mantra is Om Amitabha Hrih.
Some consider Amitabha to be synonymous with Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life. Others honor Amitayus as a form of Amitabha or as a separate Buddha. Amitayus is usually depicted holding a vessel of the elixir of immortal life. As shown in this statue, a tiny ashoka-tree often sprouts from the cover of his vessel, representing the union of the spiritual and the material.

Ratnasambhava is regarded third dhyani Buddha in order after Vairochana and Akshobhya . His recongition symbol is the jewel.The name Ratnasambhava means "the Jewel-born One" or "Origin of Jewels." The Three Jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.
The Buddha is the Enlightened One, the Guru, the hub of the wheel of the Law. The Dharma is the Teaching, or the Law. The Sangha is the Community.
Ratnasambhava transmutes the poison of pride (spiritual, intellectual and human pride) into the Wisdom of Equality. Tibetan Buddhists teach that with the Wisdom of Equality one sees all things with divine impartiality and recognizes the divine equality of all beings. One sees all beings and the Buddha as having the same nature--a condition we need, says Tucci, "to spur our spiritual ascension and to acquire the trust to realize in ourselves the status of a Buddha."
Ratnasambhava is the Dhyani Buddha of the south. His color is yellow, the color of the sun in its zenith. Ratnasambhava rules over the element of earth and embodies the skandha of feeling or sensation.

He is sometimes shown holding his symbol, the ratna (jewel) or chintamani (wish-fulfilling jewel that grants all desires). The chintamani is a symbol of the liberated mind. The ratna is often depicted in a threefold form as the triratna signifying the union of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. In the mandala the triratna is positioned between Ratnasambhava and Vairochana.

The animal that upholds Ratnasambhava's throne is the horse, denoting impetus and liberation. Ratnasambhava's mudra, formed here by his right hand, is the gesture of giving (varada mudra), signifying his gift of the Buddhist teachings. The gesture of giving, or charity, which portrays him offering compassion and protection to his disciples. He resides in the pure abode of Ratnavati
heaven (buddha field). His bija is Tram and his mantra is Om Ratnasambhava Tram.

Akshobhya is also one of the five Tathagatas or Dhyani Buddha, symbolizing Mirror like Wisdom (skt.adarsa jnana) which means the wisdom like space, all pervasive, without periphery and without character-istics. The name Akshobhya means "Immovable" or "Unshakable." Akshobhya's Mirrorlike Wisdom reflects all things calmly and uncritically and--reveals their true nature. He is the essence of purified form of Hatred. As in a mirror every visible object reflects so the knowledge of dharma-kaya reflects in our mind. Mirror like Wisdom antidotes the poison of hatred and anger.

In the Stupa or Mandala of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, Akshobhya is usually positioned in the east (which is at the bottom) but he is sometimes placed in the center. His color is blue. He rules over the element of water and personifies the skandha of form. In some system, he is associated with the skandha of consciousness. Akshobhya's lotus throne is supported by the elephant, symbol of steadfastness and strength.

His symbol is the vajra, also called the thunderbolt or diamond scepter. It is depicted in this mandala above his head, directly below Vairochana. The vajra denotes enlightenment, the indestructible, adamantine nature of pure consciousness, or the essence of Reality. In some traditions the vajra signifies the union of male principle and the Buddha; one end of the vajra symbolizes the macrocosmic realm of the Buddha and the other end the microcosmic realm of male principle.

Akshobhya exhibits bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture. Shown here formed by his right hand rest on the right knee with the tip of the middle fingers touching the ground with palm drawn inwardly. It denotes unshakability. This is also the gesture of Gautam Buddha used to calling the earth for the witness to his right to attain enlightenment when he was challenged by the Evil One, Mara.

Akshobhya's paradise is Abhirati, the Land of Exceeding Great Delight. Buddhists believe that whoever is reborn there cannot fall back to a lower level of consciousness. Akshobhya's bija is Hum and his mantra is Om Akshobhya hum.

In last post we have read about the five Dhyani Buddha (Click links to read). As we know Vairochana is the First Dhyani buddha among five dhyani Buddha. So here I am going to share some short description about Vairochana. Thanka paintings on this post are hand painted and very Good quality, It is Newari Style Thanka. Vairochana means "He Who Is Like the Sun" or "the Radiating One." Vairochana regarded as origin of the five Dhyani Buddha. His wisdom is the Wisdom of the Dharmadhatu. The Dharmadhatu ( Meaning Of DHARMADHATU ) is the Realm of Truth, in which all things exist as they really are. Vairochana's wisdom is also referred to as the All-Pervading Wisdom of the Dharmakaya. The Dharmakaya is the Body of the Law, or the absolute Buddha nature.

Vairochana's transcendent wisdom reveals the realm of highest reality and overcomes the poison of ignorance, or delusion. His wisdom is considered to be the origin of all the wisdoms of the Dhyani Buddhas.

Vairochana is usually located in the center of the stupa or mandalas of the Dhyani Buddhas. Sometimes he is placed between Akshobhya and Ratna Sambhava in the stupa. He resides always in the Akanistha heaven. According to some texts, he is positioned in the east. His color is white (or blue), symbolizing a pure consciousness. He rules over the element of ether and embodies the skandha of consciousness. In some systems, he is associated with the skandha of form.

His symbol is the dharmachakra, the wheel of the Teaching, or the wheel of the Law. It denotes the teaching of the Buddha. Its eight spokes represent the Noble Eightfold Path, which Gautama revealed in his first sermon after his enlightenment. This symbol is printed around the border of the lithograph. Vairochana's lotus throne is supported by the lion, symbol of courage, boldness and an eager, advancing spirit.

Vairochana's mudra is the dharmachakra (Bodhyanga) mudra, the gesture of turning the wheel of the Teaching. His vehicle is a pair of lions symbolizing lions roar of dharmadhatujnana which terrifies
all wrong views. He can be recognized through white disc or dharmacakra which cuts all wrong views.Because he embodies the wisdom of all Buddhas, Vairocana Buddha originates from the seed syllable Om.

His mantra is "Om Vairochana Om."

In some esoteric sect of Japan he is said to be the supreme lord of secret vehicle i.e. Mahavairocana.
When Vairocana Buddha is four faced and eight-armed he is addressed as Vajradhatu Buddha. According to Vajra-dhatumandala of Nispannayogavali, Vairocana is seated in Vajraparyanka and is white in color. His four faces are of white, yellow, red, and green color. He is eight-armed with his two hands holding a vajra and displaying dharmacakra mudra; the second pair shows dhyana mudra, third pair holds a rosary and an arrow and the last pair holds a discus and a bow.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that the Adi-Buddha, the primordial and highest being, created the Dhyani Buddhas by his meditative powers.There are five Dhyani Buddha(Buddhas in Meditation). The Five Dhyani Buddhas are Vairochana (White), Akshobhya (Blue), Ratnasambhava (Yellow), Amitabha (Red) and Amoghasiddhi (Green), see thanka above .
Dhyani Buddhas are celestial Buddhas visualized during meditation. The word Dhyani is derived from the Sanskrit words dhyana, meaning "meditation." They are also called Jinas ("Victors" or "Conquerors") and are considered to be great healers of the mind and soul. Dhyani Buddhas are not historical figures, like Gautama Buddha, but transcendent beings who symbolize universal divine principles or forces. They represent various aspects of the enlightened consciousness and are guides to spiritual transformation. They are not separate Buddha, they are just abstract aspects of Buddhahood.

Dhyani Buddha are so popular in Nepal and Tibet, that they are found in every stupa, thousands of chaityas, in courtyards, and found painted in the main entrance of the Buddhist house. Of the five Dhyani Buddha the senior is Vairochana (Left Image) who occupies center of the Mandala.

Each Dhyani Buddha are associated with certain attributes and symbols. Each one embodies one of the five wisdom, which antidote the five deadly poisons that are of ultimate danger to man's spiritual progress and keep him tied to worldly existence. Buddhists teach that the Dhyani Buddhas are able transmute the five poisons into their transcendent wisdom. The Tibetan Book of the Dead recommends that the devote meditate on the Dhyani Buddhas so that their wisdom will replace the negative forces he has allowed to take hold within.

Each Buddha rules over one of the directions of space one of the cosmic realms of ether or space, water, earth, fire and air. The Dhyani Buddhas also personify the five skandhas, components that make up cosmic existence as well as human personality. These components are consciousness, form, feeling, perception and volition.

In addition, each Dhyani Buddha is associated with a specific color, mudra (hand gesture), symbolic animal that support his throne, sacred symbol and bija (seed syllable). The bija represents the essence of the Dhyani Buddha. It can be used along with the sacred syllable Om and the Buddha's name to create mantra, a series of mystic syllables that have an esoteric meaning. In Hinduism and Buddhism, disciples recite mantras to evoke the power and presence of a divine being. In some traditions, devotees use mantras in meditation to help them be one with the deity they are invoking.

"By repeating the mantra and assuming the mudra of any Buddha," writes Buddhist monk and teacher Sangharakshita, "one can not only place oneself in correspondence or alignment with the particular order of reality which he personifies but also be infused with its transcendental power." Objectives of construction Shanti Tara Maha Stupa

1. To honor His majesty the King's 80th anniversary as the world greatest Buddhist dharmaraja.
2. To house a number of images of Buddhas and Bodhisatwas who are in aspects of Dharma Body, Enjoyment Body and Emanation Body of the Buddha.
3. To bring about peace and happiness in Thailand and the world.
4. To contribute to the continued flourishing of Buddhism.

Details about the Stupa
The stupa will be based on a 30-meter wide base, and will be around 60 meters in total height. Its outstanding feature is that it contains a temple housing four images of Buddha in Sambhogakaya forms, as well as three shrines which will include 13 other images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dharmapalas and Dakinis. These will be lined along the cardinal points. At the base of the Stupa will be a temple of five Buddha families and will be accessible to people who can walk into it. There will be a staircase from the base to the main temple to pay homage to the Buddha figures. Inside the Stupa will be filled with relics, scriptures, clay stupas and other auspicious objects.

For the noble and peace cause of the world here I start with the beautiful Prayer that Thousand Star Foundation has come up with.

"An Aspiration Prayer and An Enumeration of Merit in Building
The Shanti Tara Maha Stupa"

To teachers, gods
who belong to the lineage of teaching from the three kayas of the Buddha,
Enlightened Ones, both peaceful and wrathful deities,
in the outer, inner and secret aspects,
Dharma protectors who vow to guard
the Sutras, Termas and the Four Activities without fail,
I prostrate and pay homage
Through worshipping the Stupa until I attain Buddhahood.
At this time, in order for the wandering sentient beings in the six realms to have the opportunity to collect vast merit, an intention has been made to construct a great stupa in the form of "Yungtrung Gelek Chorten," a stupa which is beautifully and miraculously constructed. The stupa has the following characteristics.
The Stupa, as the Dharma Body,
Representing the Buddha's mind,
The Scripture, as the Enjoyment Body,
Representing the Buddha's speech,
The Buddha image, as the Emanation Body,
Representing the Buddha's body,
Images of lamas, yidams, dakinis,
Representing the mantras,
Images of the Four Tathagatas,
Representing the one thousand Buddhas,
Image of the Tempa Namda, Tsewang Rinzin, Guru Padmasambhava,
Representing the great gratitude to the Dharma and all sentient beings,
Image of Kuntrol Drakpa,
Representing the propagation of Dharma to vast expanse,
Images of Palden Lhamo, Shinje who makes the vow,
Representing the protectors of all teachings,
The Stupa is a peaceful deity amidst vastness of space,
Illuminating figure in the air,
Through the power of the Buddhas
May all evil be dispelled!
May the wrathful deities defeat those who are difficult to defeat without ceasing!
May the Yaksinis change their minds and come back to wholesome action!
May the unwholesome deeds of countless Maras be transformed!
May evil in the world disappear!
May peace happen in the world no matter where it is!
May there be a seeing that all phenomena and all things are but vast nature of Emptiness!
May the Dharma stay permanent and pervade everywhere in the universe!
May the Three Paths flourish without fail!
May the two kinds of merit be of benefit to self and others!

Importance of the Stupa

According to Buddhism, to be born as a human being is a very rare event. Life is short, a normal life duration of a person being no more than 120 years. Constantly practicing the Dharma and performing good activities thus mean that we do not waste this rare opportunity. All the wholesome action that we perform with good intention will result in good life and happiness not only in this life, but also many future lives.
The Buddha has shown various benefits of building a stupa. These include happiness, prosperity, and joy. The stupa will be a symbol of faith. Seeing and worshipping the stupa and thus becoming faithful in the Triple Gems, the minds of the faithful will enter the stream of Dharma.

Moreover, the stupa also symbolizes the strength of Buddhism and the five elements and their relationship to enlightened mind. These are the essential attributes of a fully realised human being. This can be seen in the creation of Pra Pathom Chedi, the Great Stupa in Nakorn Pathom more than a thousand years ago, which still stands today. In the future, those who have the opportunity to see Pra Pathom Chedi and worship there will be proud in the fact that Buddhism has blessed Thailand for a long time. Hence, the stupa will create blessings and auspiciousness in the land where it is built. This is so because the stupa is a representation of the Buddha. The land where a stupa is built thus becomes a Buddha field presided by a Buddha. Everything within the Buddha field will be fully blessed by the Buddha and filled with love and compassion.

In today's world, which is full of conflicts, wars and natural disasters, many are still intent on praying and giving out loving-kindness and compassion incessantly. Tibetans put up colorful prayer flags so that the wind will carry the mantras and the blessings of the Buddha to every corner of the world. Thus the mantras and the blessings will thus pervade everything in the universe, creating love, compassion and peace everywhere. We can see that the mere act of putting up small prayer flags can carry this much benefit, so it is no wonder how much more benefit would be incurred through building a stupa. Being aware of the importance of building a stupa, which will bring peace and harmony to the land as well as the liberation from suffering of countless sentience beings, the Thousand Stars Foundation has thus resolved to build the Tara Great Stupa of Peace and Harmony, which will full with finest Buddhist arts derived from the wisdom of the Tibetan culture. Building a stupa is a way to emanate loving-kindness and compassion. It is a way to protect sentience beings so that they are free from sufferings, diseases, and harm. The stupa will create auspiciousness and prosperity to the land it belongs and its people. This will result in people being united with one another and becoming faithful in their practices of the Dharma, qualities which are necessary for their eventual release from the grip of suffering. Thus building a stupa not only carried immense benefit in this life, but also in countless future lives. The benefit in contributing to building a stupa thus will play a highly significant role in the individual's attainment of Buddhahood for the good of all sentient beings in the future.

Hope You have read JAMBALA "God of Wealth" in previous post. Jambala (Dzambhala) is the God of wealth and appropriately a member of the Jewel family. In hindu Mythology Jambala known as Kuber. Jambhala is also believed to be an emanation of Avalokiteshwor Chenrezig, or the Buddha of Compassion , manifesting as the wealth-giving Buddha ( Visit JAMBALA God of Wealth to read more) . There are 5 different wealth Jambhala ( See Paintings On right). Each Jambhala has their own mantra and practice to help eliminate poverty and create financial stability. Here i will try to give few information about 5 wealth jambala and their Mantras. For easy to recognize each Jambala, see painting at the side of the post. White Dzambhala:
White Dzambhala is born from the right eye of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva , also known as the manifistation of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva . According to the sutra , his mantra can stop suffering , destroy bad karma and have a bodhichitta or mind . His mantra can also avert disaster and sickness . He also bring wealth to all sentient being by chants his mantra . Tibetan name is "Dzambhala Gapee " which means, white dzambhala . White Jambhala sits on a snow lion, although some artists depict him sitting on a dragon and in his left hand there is also a mongoose that spits out precious diamonds and ornaments.
White Jambala Mantra Is :
Om Padma Trotha Arya Zambhala Siddhaya Hum Phat

Yellow Jambala
Yellow Jambala is the manifestation of Buddha Ratnasambhava . He protected the dharma and if anyone call his name, he will come and help the person. If one has trouble with finance or anything, one can chant his mantra and he will come and help. But one must have a bodhi mind and practice Buddhism properly to attain his blessings. One can also gain wealth, wisdom, intelligence and at last! Attain Buddha hood!. Yellow Jambhala sits on a lotus, sun and moon disk. He holds a mongoose in his left hand and from its mouth spews forth precious jewels.
Yellow Jamabala Mantra Is :
OM ZAMBALA ZALENDHRAYE SOHA

Black Kubera or Jambhala
Black Kubera is the manifistation of Buddha Akshobhaya . Black Kubera is also called as the chief of the five great Jambhalas as he is said to have given people wealth and happiness. He is also known as one of the hindu god of wealth, Kubera . Those who chant his mantra will get wealth and also if one have any kind wishes, he will also fufill it and bring happiness. Black Jambala has two mantra . Black jambala Uselly Standing upon corpse and holding Mongoose in his left hand and Kapala is in right hand. he is Black in color .
Black Jambala Mantras are :
1. Om Zambhala Dzamlim Dzaye Svaha
2. Om Indzali Mu Kan Dzamali Svaha

Red Jambhala
Red Jambhala is the manifisation of Vajrasattva . He has two faces and four arms and holds a treasury mongoose on his left hand. Tibetan name for him is “Dzambhala Mapo " If one chants his mantra sincerely , one will be protected by him and also gain wealth and one can lead a very good life and become popular . Red Ganpati also worshiped as Red Jambhala.
RED Jambala Mantra:
Om Dzambhala Dzalim Dzaya Nama Mumei E She E , Om Dzachini Dzambhala Dzambhala Svaha !

Green Jambhala
Green Jambhala is also a form of Buddha Akshobhya , who is blue in colour . Green Dzambhala made a vow in front of Buddha Sakyamuni that he will protect anyone who chant his mantra or chant his name. When one has difficulties, it is best to chant sincerely in one's heart the mantra. Green Jambala's mantra is the same mantra as the yellow Jambhala Mantra.

Green Jambala Mantra Is :
OM ZAMBALA ZALENDHRAYE SOHA

Now you know about all five Jambala in brifely. If you wish to worship Jambhala into your home is to look for a small image of any Jambhala and place under falling water in a six-level waterfall. Or every morning pour water to the jamabala Statues. Place this in the South/West sector of your living room. If you do this every morning, you will be activating the most auspicious sector in you and your family life .

why we offer (pour) water on Jambala Statues ?
According to the sutras , it is said that, while Sakyamuni Gautam Buddha was teaching the Maha Prajna-Paramita Sutra. Devadatta, the jealous cousin of Shakyamuni Buddha, threw rocks at the Buddha, jsut at that time the Jambhalas were appear in front of buddha and protect Buddha. And the rocks hit White and Yellow Jambhalas on their heads and hit Black Jambhala on the stomach. That's why White and Yellow Jambhalas feel bliss when water offering is poured on their heads. This eases their pain. For the same reason for Black Jambhala, water should be poured onto his stomach.

Heavenly King Vaishravana
Vaishravana is one of the four great heavenly king who rules over the northen part of the heaven. He is known as the Fortune Heavenly king or The Great Fulfiller of Wish. It is belived, he is the one who granted wishes that we have. Around him , eight dzambhala surrounding him to assist (see picture top right). In one of the sutras , it is said that he is the form of the Buddha Ratnasambhava who is yellow in colour . Vaishravana known in Tibetan as " Namtose " .
His Mantra Is :
Om Bay Xia Wa Na Ya So Ha
